SELECTING THE RIGHT WEB DESIGNER FOR YOUR NEEDS
No matter if you are a business, individual, or private organization, these days if you are looking to effectively promote yourself, which means you need a web site. Unfortunately for most of us, you may as well ask us to begin speaking in Ancient Greek than turning us loose trying to build our own sites, and this is a problem. One of the biggest issues with selecting a web developer is that the very skills needed to recognize a good developer and tell them apart from a poor one are the very skills needed to do the work in the first place! So what is a regular person to do when they are looking to have an affordable web site built? They should start by following these three universal tips:
- Inquire about their expertise – Depending on what your needs are, you want to make sure any providers you are looking at are able to fill them. If you just want a simple site this isn’t an issue, but if you need to do things like securely accept payment, your site had better be designed properly and securely. You need someone proficient enough for your particular circumstances.
- Check their portfolio and references – Any reputable company should be more than willing to provide you with numerous references, and an opportunity to view their portfolio, dummy sites, or other work you have done for clients in the past. If they won’t let you see these things or speak to previous customers, you are either dealing with an amateur, or someone that has a poor reputation in the industry, so beware!
- Verify that pricing is competitive – Once you have found a designer you feel comfortable with, have another provider verify that their quote seems fair and accurate (probably by getting a second quotation from that vendor, to keep them honest!). If the prices seem similar, you are probably dealing with an honest designer.
If you keep these three concerns foremost in your mind as you begin your hunt for web design, you are going to end up with a provider who suits your needs perfectly. You will get great work done at a reasonable price, and your site will hopefully serve the purpose for which it was intended.
